S237 - General Operations Manager - Arable - Malawi

De Lacy Executive has been retained to recruit a General Operations Manager for a large cropping and livestock business in Malawi. The business farms around 7,000 ha of which approximately 3,000ha are arable with 400ha under irrigation. The business has a diverse portfolio, specialising in seed production, crop exportation and also supplying the domestic market across a variety of different species. Reporting into the CEO, this senior position will be a leading role in the farming operations department and will involve day to day management of farming and agribusiness processes across Malawi, supported by three Operations managers.

De Lacy Executive has been retained to recruit a General Operations Manager for a large cropping and livestock business in Malawi. The business farms around 7,000 ha of which approximately 3,000ha are arable with 400ha under irrigation. The business has a diverse portfolio, specialising in seed production, crop exportation and also supplying the domestic market across a variety of different species. Reporting into the CEO, this senior position will be a leading role in the farming operations department and will involve day to day management of farming and agribusiness processes across Malawi, supported by three Operations managers.

Responsibilities:

Develop a group farm annual cropping plan to include crop allocation, land rotations, irrigation and production contracts in liaison with Operations Managers.

Ensure weekly and monthly work plans are achieving optimum output from available skills, labour, supervision capacity, with optimum use of machinery.

Implement procurement procedures in liaison with Head of Procurement at Head Office.

Supervision of and support to Operations Managers / Section Managers.

Ensure adequate teams are allocated to all tasks and provided with the information, skills and equipment needed to complete tasks efficiently.

Ensure development and use of crop records, crop ledgers to record production costs, harvest trackers to record yields, climate data and other records mandated from time to time.

Human resource management tasks: disciplinary processes, re-organisation of labour force, labour management planning, farm staff performance appraisal system and staff training assessments.

Liaison with Sales Manager to report volumes ready for market in formats required, and ensuring stock ready for sale.

Liaison and proactive communications with Government and other officials; for example seed inspection services.

Oversee development of on-farm research trials consistent with farm plans, in connection to research organizations and the companys own trials unit.

Requirements:

At least 6 years experience in a similar position.

Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, Irrigation, Farm Management or a related field.

Experience of establishing and managing large scale irrigated crop production in Africa, including pivot and sprinkler systems.

Experience in production of at least 4 of the following: Hybrid seed maize, Groundnuts, Dry beans /soya, Paprika, Commercial maize, Sunflower and Sesame.

Technical knowledge of agrochemical and fertiliser programme implementation.

Experience of managing large numbers of staff.

A positive and pro-active attitude towards company efforts to build healthy relationships with local communities and to contribute towards their development through services provided at farm level, and through donor funded agricultural projects.

Aptitude for team building, pro-active staff training, consultative management decisions and a strong awareness of the factors influencing staff motivation and performance.

An ability to prioritize workload and work independently.

Strong IT skills, especially Excel.
